12 Units of S13-500kVA/35kV Transformers for an Island Microgrid in the Philippines
Project Overview
HBTP supplied 12 units of S13-500/35 transformers for a hybrid renewable energy microgrid for a remote island community in the Visayas region, Philippines. The project represents a significant deployment in the island microgrid sector, requiring transformers engineered for reliable operation under demanding conditions.
Project Background
The Philippines consists of over 7,000 islands, many of which lack reliable grid connection. This microgrid project replaces expensive and polluting diesel-only power with a hybrid system combining solar, wind, diesel, and battery storage, providing 24/7 power to a remote island community of approximately 5,000 residents.
Customer Requirements
Requirements included: 500kVA capacity, 35kV/0.4kV ratio, S13 efficiency, suitability for hybrid microgrid operation with variable load profiles, corrosion-resistant construction for coastal island environment, and compliance with Philippine Electrical Code (PEC) standards.
Our Solution
HBTP supplied its S13-series transformers, engineered specifically for island microgrid applications. The high-quality CRGO silicon steel core with step-lap mitered joints minimizes no-load losses, while copper windings provide enhanced short-circuit withstand capability and long service life.

Quality & Testing
All units passed routine electrical tests and salt spray corrosion testing. Special attention was given to voltage regulation performance under variable load conditions typical of microgrid operation, where renewable generation and demand fluctuate throughout the day.
Delivery & Installation
The 12 units were delivered by sea to Cebu, then by inter-island vessel to the project site. HBTP engineers supervised installation and provided microgrid-specific commissioning support, coordinating with the microgrid controller for seamless source switching.
Project Outcomes
All 12 transformers were successfully energized and are operating at rated capacity. The project was completed on schedule, and the customer has reported excellent performance with no unplanned outages attributed to transformer equipment. HBTP's reliable power distribution solution has contributed to the project's overall success and operational efficiency.
