28 Units of S13-2500kVA/35kV Transformers Power a 120MW Wind Farm in Poland
Project Overview
In 2023, HBTP supplied 28 units of S13-2500kVA/35kV oil-immersed step-up transformers for a 120MW utility-scale wind farm in northern Poland. The project required transformers capable of operating reliably in harsh outdoor conditions while meeting strict EU grid connection standards.
Project Background
Poland has been aggressively expanding its wind energy capacity as part of its transition away from coal-fired power. The 120MW wind farm, situated in the coastal region of Pomerania, features 48 wind turbines with a combined capacity sufficient to power approximately 80,000 households. Each turbine generates power at 690V, which must be stepped up to 35kV for collection and transmission to the onshore substation.
Customer Requirements
The project developer specified stringent requirements: voltage ratio 0.69kV/35kV, capacity 2500kVA, IEC 60076 standard, no-load loss ≤ 2.1kW (S13 efficiency), ambient temperature -30°C to +40°C, IP54 protection for coastal installation, and noise level ≤ 62dB(A) at 1m.
Our Solution
HBTP supplied its S13-series oil-immersed transformers, engineered specifically for renewable energy applications. The high-quality CRGO silicon steel core with step-lap mitered joints minimizes no-load losses by 15% compared to S11 series, while copper foil low-voltage windings provide enhanced short-circuit withstand capability.
| Parameter | Specification |

Quality & Testing
Every transformer underwent comprehensive testing in HBTP's in-house laboratory: no-load loss, load loss, induced overvoltage, lightning impulse (LI 200kV), partial discharge (≤100 pC), temperature rise, and sound level tests. All test reports were reviewed and approved by the customer's third-party inspection agency.
Delivery & Installation
Production lead time was 14 weeks from order confirmation. All 28 units were transported by rail from Baoding to Gdansk port, then by road to the wind farm site. HBTP engineers provided on-site commissioning support, including oil filtration, vacuum filling, and initial energization supervision.
Project Outcomes
All 28 transformers were successfully energized and operating at rated capacity. Zero defects were reported during the first 12 months of operation. The developer has since awarded HBTP a follow-up order for an additional 15 units for a neighboring wind farm project.
