22 Units of S11-1600kVA Transformers + 8 Pad-Mounted Substations for a Copper Mine in Chile
Project Overview
HBTP supplied 22 units of S11-1600kVA/10kV oil-immersed transformers and 8 pad-mounted substations for a copper mining operation in the Atacama Desert, Chile. The mine produces over 200,000 tons of copper concentrate annually.
Project Background
Chile is the world's largest copper producer, and mining operations require robust power infrastructure in remote, harsh environments. This mine operates at an altitude of 3,500 meters with extreme temperature variations and high UV exposure.
Customer Requirements
Specifications included: 1600kVA capacity, 10kV/0.4kV ratio, S11 efficiency, altitude derating to 3,500m, -20°C to +40°C operating range, UV-resistant exterior paint, and pad-mounted substations with MV switchgear integrated.
Our Solution
HBTP provided transformers with upgraded insulation for high-altitude operation and reinforced tanks for transport over rough mining roads. The pad-mounted substations integrate MV switchgear, transformer, and LV distribution in a single tamper-proof enclosure, ideal for remote mine sites.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Model | S11-1600/10 |
| Capacity | 1600 kVA |
| Voltage Ratio | 10 / 0.4 kV |
| Altitude Rating | 3,500m |
| Temperature Range | -20°C to +40°C |
| Substations | 8x Pad-Mounted |
Quality & Testing
All units passed high-voltage tests with altitude correction factors applied. The pad-mounted substations underwent type tests for IP54 enclosure integrity and internal arc classification (IAC).
Delivery & Installation
Equipment was shipped to Antofagasta port, then transported 400km by road to the mine site. HBTP engineers supervised installation and provided operator training for the mine's maintenance crew.
Project Outcomes
The mining operation achieved full production capacity with reliable power distribution. The pad-mounted substations have reduced maintenance requirements compared to the previous conventional substation design.
