15 Units of S13-5000kVA/110kV Transformers for an Aluminum Smelter in Iceland

Project Overview

HBTP supplied 15 units of S13-5000/110 transformers for a green aluminum smelter powered by geothermal and hydro energy in eastern Iceland. The project represents a significant deployment in the aluminum smelting sector, requiring transformers engineered for reliable operation under demanding conditions.

Project Background

Iceland produces aluminum using 100% renewable geothermal and hydroelectric power, making it one of the greenest aluminum producers in the world. This smelter has an annual production capacity of 350,000 tons. Aluminum smelting requires massive amounts of DC power, supplied through rectifier transformers that handle high harmonic content.

Customer Requirements

Large 5000kVA rectifier-duty transformers, 110kV/1kV voltage ratio, OFAF cooling for continuous high-load operation, design for 12-pulse rectifier systems with high harmonic content, S13 efficiency, and suitability for Iceland's cold climate.

Our Solution

HBTP supplied its S13-series transformers, engineered specifically for aluminum smelting applications. The high-quality CRGO silicon steel core with step-lap mitered joints minimizes no-load losses, while copper windings provide enhanced short-circuit withstand capability and long service life.

Quality & Testing

Rectifier transformers underwent special tests including harmonic loss measurement, DC bias withstand, and extended temperature rise under non-sinusoidal load. All units passed standard type tests plus rectifier-specific performance verification.

Delivery & Installation

The large 5000kVA units required specialized heavy transport. HBTP coordinated with Icelandic logistics for delivery to the remote eastern fjord location and provided commissioning support for the rectifier system integration.
